Wonderful are the moments in music when the game is redefined with a soundscape that is so salacious. The inimitable James Brown was just that, an artist who reintroduced music to itself. In 1950’s Ray Charles came on the scene and breathed life in to R & B which was sewed together from the threads of gospel, blues and jazz music. Brother Brown on the other hand invoked the soul of music at a time where the melodies were more spirited than the performer himself. If it were not for James the soul would have been shy, and whats more the funk may have been reclusive in the monolithic musical climate of the 50’s and 60’s. When JB told us “Papa has a brand bag,” he was not lying cause that kat turned the industry out, if it wasn’t for him we might still be doing the twist in the club.
Great is the influence of James Brown in the hip hop community. Early samples of the Ultamagnetic Crew’s Critical Beatdown until “Get down” on Nas God Son exhibit the divine influence the Godfather of soul has had on the instrumentals of hip hop.
James Brown was a man nor myth, he was a legend, scratch that he was Musical God amongst men. He represents the best in of ourselves and the apex of good music. In fact, James Brown proves that our creator has a keen taste in music. Although music will continue to die and be reborn, we will remeber the Godfather of soul for the funk he blessed us with and the soul he helped us acknowledge. Just imagine, what would music sound like if James Brown never turned the game out?
