A Conversation with Brian Cronin

I was seeing this free publication everywhere, so I decided to find out what it was all about. Origivation, a combination of “original” and “preservation,” encompasses Brian Cronin’s thoughts on Philly’s music scene and what it needs.

What is Origivation and how did you get started? Origivation Magazine is a monthly publication with 10,000 copies distributed freely throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding areas, including Central PA, DE, NJ, and NYC. I have always been a fan of original music- ever since I can remember. When the former publisher, Anthony Caroto, decided to relocate to Arizona, he presented me with an opportunity I couldn’t resist. I was always a loyal reader and advertiser of the magazine, and wanted to be involved on some level to help educate the local community about it’s local musicians.

What is missing from Philly’s local music scene? It saddens me that with all the talent we have, I don’t see enough fans of local music. There isn’t enough local support to force the average person to go out and watch a great performance. Another thing is the local support musicians have for other musicians. There are too many cliques throughout the city, and most of the time it interferes with their music. They don’t utilize the skills they have to promote their own music.

What are your future goals for Origivation? I honestly would like to make Origivation a household name. Every magazine has to start somewhere, and I believe if we gain enough local support we can reach that level eventually. By next year, we plan on printing in full color and distribute it throughout the east coast region, but to get there is one step at a time. As long as Philly musicians keep making great noise, we’ll be able to continue filling the magazine with great content, and the readers will keep reading. We love feedback, so please encourage everyone to check us out online and post on our message board.
