Oh my brothers and sisters, I feel your pain. The world is an odd place. I’m no different than any of you.
Life is rare and precious. We should probably utilize the time on earth that we’re given to do important things like spend time with loved ones, enjoy relaxing drinks on a beach, or you know…sleep all day (ahhh).
But instead we humans grind. We trap the young of our species in square sized cubicles and don’t let them out till they turn 65.
I, sad to say, am one of those youngsters. Gone are the country roaming, easy spirited times of my early twenties. I’m in the mid-twenties now battling away at a career so I can earn enough money to escape to a life of more personal freedoms and less stress.
I’m no different than you. All I really have in this life is my music. So when I’m stuck in that cubicle I look for anything that can make my day a bit easier to swallow. Pandora can help you.
What is this Pandora I speak of, you ask? Good question. Pandora is a website (www.pandora.com). It’s totally free at this moment and extremely easy to use. The site allows any individual to create his or her own little, commercial free radio station in just seconds by simply entering the name of an artsit or song in a little box. The result is hours of uninterrupted music by artists that fall in line with the genre, attributes, or influences of what you choose. And the best part, in my opinion, is that you don’t get the usual easy-to-find hit singles and top of the surface stuff that plays on FM radio. Pandora digs deep into albums and pulls out gems that you usually wouldn’t find without going pretty deep into an artists catalogue.
Pandora was created by The Music Genome Project, a group of artists and technologists that gathered in 2000 with “the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever”. The result is a database of over 10,000 artists spanning hundreds of genres from Hip Hop and dance music, to Country, and bedroom Folk. You can create an entire channel of songs around a contemporary indie band like Architecture in Helsinki, or a classic rock institution like the Beatles. You can go as obsure or as mainstream as you choose and chances are, you will find something to your liking at the click of a mouse.
I regret to say that my heinous work instition blocked our internet access to Pandora just this past Monday. So I will no longer be able to music surf my way through glorious chores like paper filing and getting yelled at by my supervisor (just kidding, she doesn’t yell at me). But it’s cool; I still have my CD’s and the “sometimes cool” stations I find on Windows Media Player.
Go take advantage of Pandora before your boss cuts you off. Or simply enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.
Fall in line with the revolution.
