As you may know, Freshout has been steadily on the grind producing memorable events around the Philadelphia area for a hot minute now. We strive to bring you the freshest live artists, expose important cultural issues, and create a truly unique atmosphere at each and every show we stamp our name on. With that said, you definitely do not want to miss the next event we’re throwing this Thursday at World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut Street - W. Philly) at 9pm. This time around, we’ve reached out to Keep A Child Alive (KCA) to draw awareness to the plight of AIDS in Africa. KCA is a non-profit organization providing life-saving treatment to children and their families with HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Opening up the show, Becca’s Brew and Mental Notes are coming all the way from the Bronx to rock with us. We’ve done shows with these guys before, and they are amazing musicians and just great people in general to work with. Backed by a full band, Becca will get things moving with her soulful, melodic vocal tones. Picking up the momentum, Mental Notes (lead by emcee Spirit Child on the mic) will set things off with their politically-charged performance. Get there early, because you do not want to miss either act.
After a quick intermission to say a few words about Keep A Child Alive and their cause, MC Squared will take the stage. If you’re not already familiar with MC Squared, he is one of best beat-boxers to ever touch a mic. New to Philadelphia, MC Squared has been praised by Rahzel as “one of the very few talents to capture one’s imagination,” and he won first place in all four rounds of the 2002 annual Apollo Theater Amateur Night competition. He toured last year with Sage Francis, and has performed alongside Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Living Legends, Blackalicious, J-Live, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, Zion I, Murs, Jin tha MC, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, and many more. He has a DVD out, from which proceeds are going to KCA to help fund HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy) medication for children in Africa with HIV/AIDS.
Bringing the night to a close, 84 will remind everyone what Philly hip hop is all about. Comprised of emcees Aulpurpis and Fatnice, and DJ/producer Blaak the 9th Man, 84 has been contributing to the Philly hip-hop scene for years. They are former members of the renowned group Prophets of the Ghetto, and they’ve collaborated with Kev Brown and Hezekiah, produced a slew of independently released CDs, and have toured with the likes of DJ Cash Money and Bahamadia. They haven’t done a Philly show in awhile, so be expecting a performance to remember.
And what would a Freshout show be without live art? John Fitzpatrick and Nicole Porter will be collaborating on a painting throughout the night, which will depict how the AIDS pandemic is ravaging the people of Africa. The painting will later be sold, from which proceeds will benefit KCA.
Things will get started at 9pm with DJ.I.M and Rest spinning those classics you know and love. The show is 18 to enter and 21 to drink, and it’s only $5 to get in! We’ll see you there…
