The Best Band You’ve Never Heard Of

I stumbled upon Land of Ill Earthquakes a few weeks ago on a cold, damp Wednesday afternoon. Out “sick” from work, I had nothing to do but surf the internet in my boxers with a bowl of cereal, while the bleak weather outside made it feel like a pretty sinister winter-on-the-east-coast kind of day.

I’m sure my mood had something to do with the fact that for a whole week I had been on this crazy Wu-Tang jones where all I listened to was Raekwon and GZA… but then, out of nowhere, I found myself (as sometimes happens while mindlessly surfing MySpace) on the page of Land of Ill Earthquakes. Instantly, I wished it was June instead of January because all I wanted to do was run through some grassy field barefoot, fall under a tree, light one up and relax- and maybe just enjoy my day right there.

While the music definitely evokes comparisons to bands like The Thrills, The Essex Green, and Architecture in Helsinki, it somehow also stands apart from all those bands by being a bit dirtier…or maybe more humble…or maybe they sound like a band who is really still in love with each other and their music.

The bottom line here is that this group is amazing and probably won’t be such a secret here on the east coast for much longer. So go listen to their music and pray for Spring time….by the way… “Acres of Fakers” and “Judy” are two of the best songs anywhere right now.

Good review. It’s hot how you described how the music made you feel. This is so important with music, it puts you on top of the world, its transcends time and space and its like heaven on earth. I feel you. And this particular group does provide, especially when their music is one of a kind compared to a lot of the cholestorol thats out there. But……You really wanted to run through a grassy field, thats not just the music mi amigo!

Born and raised in NYC but the family is originally from Barbados, WI. Moved to Philly about 3 years ago and immediately fell in love with the city and it’s diverse but tight knit art community. I am constantly striving to learn more about anything I possibly can, and I live for discovering new (or old) quality music. In my time I have written for several small publications, acted in several plays and short films, traveled several countries, and actively work on several musical projects with friends. Isn’t several a great word?
