I know what you’re thinking but Bryan Adams stopped making music. So has The Band. But are you really worried? The makers of Canadian VO , kick-ass maple syrup and national health care wouldn’t let us down for long.It turns out, the past 5 years have seen a huge influx of movie studios and record production houses into Canada. Nowhere is this more true than in Toronto. It was here that Jason Collett first created Radio Mondays, a singer-songwriter meetup that spawned his involvement with influential alt-pop pioneers Broken Social Scene. The ideas shared at Radio Mondays would go on to birth numerous Toronto acts like Hayden, Tamara Williamson and The Weakerthans. While BSS was on hiatus, Radio Mondays went through a revival of sorts, bringing in new, upcoming acts to share. And of course, it gave Collett a chance to try out new material.Almost three years later, Collett has developed a modest solo following. His compositions, without the Scene behind him, are less exploratory but vocally gruff and soulful and lyrically much deeper. If I were an asshole, I would call him Dylan-esque, a moniker I am sure he never tires of.Especially with his newest material (Here’s To Being Here, due out in February) the hooks are merciless as the tracks become less frenzied, but no less intriguing. By subtracting these elements, it forces listeners to take notice of the honesty and integrity of the Singer-Songwriter. This will serve him well as he goes on tour with Feist through the end of November.
